- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)There were matrons and orphans in all the houses long ago. there llived an old woman who was a widow called sally Payne in one of the houses and she taught the orphans to make straw hats. All the girls had to wear their hair very short like a boy and they had to wear the straw hats. The orphans long ago wore hand knit stockings, strong boots, light blue frocks, white pinafores, red berets and navy coats. About twenty years ago only two houses had orphans in them and then they moved into one. There are only ten girls in the present orphanage. Long ago the kitchen of the present orphanage was the school and all the girls had to go there to be taught as there were no national schools.
