When the cows are kept in at night the udder has to be washed well, before they are milked. If they are not well washed, the milk will be all dirt on the top when finished milking.
The house that they stay in is called the byre. They eat hay, turnips, mangolds, cotton cake, oil cake and crushed oats.
The bedding are generally straw but when no straw is to be had , hay will do.
People on St. Briget's day make crosses and hang them in the byre and then they say that the cows will give plenty of milk the whole year around.
The cows are tied by the neck. The tyings are generally made of iron- Bailitheoir
