- In olden times the majority of the houses were thatched. Some of the people thatched them with rushes and others thatched them with oaten straw, or wheaten straw or rye straw. The old houses had a bed in the kitchen which was called a settlebed. It was placed along by the side wall.In olden times the fireplace was often placed in the middle of the floor or in the corner where the side wall and gable wall met. The chimney was made of clay and wattles and often there was a hole made in the roof of the house and a bottomless bucket put in it.
