“Long ago people used to make rush candles.”
Long ago people used to make rush candles. My father used to see people making them. First they would gather a large bundle of big fat rushes. They are to be found in bog drains. They would peel the rushes in strips until there would be one strip left to keep them together.
They are then left to dry. They would get a griset, a thing something like a sauceboat. They would melt fat on the griset.
Next they would dipthe rushes into the griset. They would tie the rushes together and hang them up till they(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
