- There is only one forge in the parish. It belongs to Mr James Boyce. The forge is situated at the back of his own dwelling at the end of the village of Rathowen. It is a thatched structure. There is a large bellows, and by blowing this up and down the fires is kindled, and it reddens the shoeing bars, with which the blacksmith makes shoes for horses and donkeys. He also makes fittings for ploughs, for mowing machines, for gates, and even would weld a piece of iron for motor or lorry.
There is a wheel in the shape of a cart wheel, made of stones beside a pond between the village and the chapel, whereon he shoes wheels.- Bailitheoir
