  1. Long ago the Irish people said different prayers to those said nowadays. When a visitor came into a house he said. "God save all here". When getting up in the mornings they said "That God may be with me through the day". When starting work they said "I will begin now in the name of God". When going to bed they said a beautiful prayer. "Here I lay down my head to sleep, I give my soul to God to keep, if any evil happen me blessed Mary waken me. There are four corners on my bed there are four angles overhead. Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John, God bless this bed that I lie on. Lord be the branch, Lady be the flower, Lord Jesus be with me at my dying hour. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ crucified bless me O Lord and after this short a miserable pilgrim bring me to life everlasting. Amen.
