  1. It was not all the food that the old people ate that made them stout.
Then meats were not very regular but they had no more than three bare meals.
Then ; it was not rashers, sausages, etc for breakfast, but a quantity of Indian porridge with butter-milk and home made, oaten bread. Before breakfast, where there would be a large family they would have to do some work, and the child that would have the most work done would get the most porridge.
They had an abundance of potatoes and as usual buttermilk and salt and a little vegetables for dinner.
The mother used to have a large pan filled with potatoes and covered with buttermilk placed on the table for the children of the household for dinner.
A similar supper as the dinner and breakfast was prepared.
It is roughly one hundred years since the first sack of tea came to our district.
The bread was made on a small sheet of iorn or tin and baked on a grid iorn.
