  1. Probably the nearest holy well to the town of Moate is that at the now disused (except for strangers) burial ground at Kilnahinch. The place is known as Monaster.
    1 Name - none except the holy well at Monaster.
    2 Situation - to the south of the boundry wall of the old cemetary. In the boundry wall is portion of an old church and the well is about 30 yards from this. There is nothing of note nearly in line of stone or bush - there is a modern wall built up to capture the waters, which serve as a drinking fountain for cattle at present. Some distance to the east is a white thorn bush mixed with furze, in which the place abounds. According to a tradition when the monastery was plundered the monks fled (they are supposed to have buried some of their treasures before they fled) in different directions but some of them were captured. These were claimed to this bush when they were left day and night without food or drink until they died from exposure and hunger.
    3 There is no remembrance of any saint in connection with the place nor is it remembered that there ever was a pattern
