2. Old Houses

   “The houses of long ago were mud wall.”

   

   Roinn Roinn Postáil

   The houses of long ago were mud wall. The mud was got out of a drain and there were rushes mixed through it. There were thatched houses. Most of them had a bed in the kitchen. It was called a settle bed and it was mostly placed at the back wall. The fireplace was generally in the gabel wall. The front of the chimneys were made of clay and wattles. Some of the houses had no chimneys, there were holes in the end of the houses and the smoke went out
