Starch-Making.
Long ago people used to make starch by grating some potatoes, and leaving them to drain in a bowl or basin for an hour or so, then they strained off the water and the starch remained in the bowl. Then it was used the same as nowadays.
Thatching.
Thatching is still carried on extensively in rural districts in Ireland and the thatcher has to know all about his trade before he is allowed to carry it out.
Before thatching commences a lot of preparations have to be made. First the straw must be procured and the rods collected to make what is called scollops to keep the straw in position.
