Local Marriage Customs
24th January, 1938. People have no special days for getting married in this locality, but they do not get married in Lent. There are certain months and days throughout the year that are classed un-lucky for getting married, for instant May as the old proverb says "If you marry in May rue the day." Saturday is also an unlucky day because "Saturday's flitting makes a short sitting."
When people are getting married in this district of Abbeylara they go "match - making." The man who intends to get married brings with him comrade - boy. The custom in olden times was to bring with them a bottle of whiskey. Their idea in doing that was to put the intended bride's father in "good spirits"(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
