Cloonfin Wood is 3 1/2 miles from the town of Granard; it covers about one and a half acres of ground. It is very famous as well as historic spot, and figured during the reign of the "Black and Tans" in Ireland in 1921.
An ambush took place there on the 9th April, 1921. A battle immediately followed about one o'clock a.m. in which General Sean McEoin and his Volunteer force fought so bravely killing many of the "Black and Tans", and wounding a large number of them.
The following ballad was composed by some of the Irish Volunteers belonging to this district of Granard after the Battle of Cloonfin, called the "Battle of Cloonfin"
