Festival Customs
11th April, 1938. On Saint Stephen's Day the boys and the young men of this district of Granard, Co. Longford, gather together and they dress themselves up with "false faces", wigs, and old clothes, and they go round the whole district dancing and playing music from one house to another.
They go into every house and two of them play the "French fiddle, or the accordion", and the rest of them dance. When they are finished dancing they say, "Give me a penny to bury the wren", and the people give them from two-pence to sixpence.
Then when night comes they count their money and they divide it evenly amongst them, and they have a "Wren dance".
