The Local Forges
2nd May, 1938. There are five smiths in the district of Granard, Co. Longford; they are Patrick Nedley, Patrick Mac Nally, James Flynn, Patrick Doherty and Hugh Doherty. The Nedley family were smiths for many generations. Their forge is situated on one of the main roads leading to the town. It is one of the principal forges in Granard.
The forge is a medium sized one, the sides are built of stone to about six feet from the ground, and the rest of wood. The roof is of curved galvanized iron, painted black. The tools he uses are a bellows, and anvil, poker, hammer, rasp, pinchers, knife, vice, ten different sizes of tongs and several sizes of punches for making holes, a hack saw, a drilling machine, a filler, a stamp and a trough for cold water.
