The Potatoe Crop
My Father has two acres of ground under potatoes every year.
Sometimes the amount varies, he sows more or less. A hired man prepares the ground.
The ground is ploughed in early Winter, and in Spring it is cross-ploughed and harrowed and cleaned with a spring-tooth harrow. After that the drills are opened with a plough.
During this time my mother has a very busy tine cutting the potatoe seed. The real big potatoes are cut into four splits and the middle sized ones are cut into halves. In every split there is an eye. When the seed potatoes are a long time cut, lime is shaken on them to keep them fresh.
When the drills are opened farm-yard manure is carted(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
