- In Lent the old people used to have a black fast. On a fast day they used to drink black tea and eat bread made with water. On every other day they used to drink black tea also, and they would not eat meat for their dinner. On Good Friday and Ash Wednesday they would not eat either butter, meat or eggs. For the old people say that anyone who does not eat these on those Holy Days that sickness will never enter the house. Some old people used to fast the whole of Lent on bread and water alone. Very many old never broke their fast on any day in Lent until after twelve o’clock, and most of the men used to put up their pipe until(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
