Severe Weather
The storm of 1902A severe storm broke out one night in the year 1902. It was so bad that ships were blown up on the land, hay was blown miles away, tops were lifted off sheds and taken away.
My mother lived in Belfield at the time the house was surrounded by trees. The storm began in the evening and in the morning all the trees were down but none of them fell on the house.
There is a wood in Cangort belonging to Mrs Atkinson. In that wood stood a large tree which was the largest tree in Ireland. That night the wind was so bad that the tree was blown down. All the people of Shinrone was out looking at it and were amazed at its size.
