- In olden times all the house are thatched. The thatch was made of wheaten straw. They used to have a bed in the kitchen, called a settle bed. The fire-place was against the gable wall. The front of the chimney was made of clay and wattles. The old people told me that they remember a hole in the thatch for a chimney, and holes in the side of the house for windows, and at night they used to put a bag of straw in them. The floors were made of clay. The material they used for the fire was sods they used to get on a hill close by. Dips and rushlights were used at night.
