But he adds that the accomodation was inadequate, showing that its popularity was already on the wane.It is probable that Swanlinbar was then so important because the continent of Europe was closed to visitors on account of the Napoleonic wars.Another authority states that Henry Grattan spent a holiday at Swanlinbar. The village was destroyed by fire in 1786 a.d. and its twenty-two houses razed to the ground.
