   The attempted destruction of Swanlinbar Catholic Church.
   Years after the new church of Swanlinbar had been built the landlord received a demand for a very heavy rent which had been placed upon it. The parish priest refused to pay it and the landlord threatened to destroy it as soon as the time given for payment of the rent had expired, however, all the able-bodied Catholics from the surrounding parishes flocked into Swanlinbar to prevent the destruction of their church and succeeded in doing so. In praise of their valour the following poem, which is still preserved in the locality was composed.

   Ye gentle muses, I pray excuse me
   For my invasion on learning's wing,
   Inspire my genius, ye bards and sages,
   My country's praises I mean to sing.

   II

   Tradition mentions without contradiction
   How Blessed St. Patrick, he was sent o'er,
   By Pope Celestine to improve a vineyard
   called Inis Óz on the Virgin Shore.
