“The following was related to me bu Mr. John Leddy the Cross, Miltown. When he was a boy, some forty or fifty years ago...”
he worked occasionally in the quarry close to the house of John Gunn, Creeney.
Gunn was the local poet of that time and was then a very old man.
The then master of Milltown (or Drumlane) was Patrick Brady and he had occasion to send Gunn a note demanding school fees.
Knowing that Gunn was a poet, he the master sent in verse.
Gunn replied in verse. The demand and reply are as follows.1. Dear Mr Gunn, my sweet and honey
Please send to me a little money
For the education of your daughter Jane
and I yours truly will remain
Patrick Brady, Master of Drumlane2. Dear Sir, you'r most discreet
To title me so very neat
But times are now so very bad
There is no money to be had
But you wait till next Market day
I will surely you repay
