- The houses built long ago were thatched with straw, or heather. Every body grew his own oats and wheat from which the thatch was procured. In these old houses there was a bed called a settle bed. It was made of wood and it was folded up in the day time. It was was placed along the wall. The mattress which was called a tick was made of feathers and other times filled with chaff.
