- There was a hedge school in Mullamagavan . The local name for it was 'Mullamagavan' school. It was in a farmers house and his name was Smith. It was taught indoors and usually there was a guard watching some distance away for fear of the enemy.
The parents of the children who sent them to school paid the teacher for teaching the children. The name of the teacher was Master Plunkett and he lodged in Luke Reilly's house in Corfad. He was a stranger, and every child gave him a shilling a quarter. He taught English, Arithmetic and some Irish.
The name of their book was 'Seaquills' and they wrote on slates with a slate pencil. They were arranged in classes. The teacher left when the school stopped.- Bailitheoir
