- The are no hedge schools in our district at the present time, but a few years ago there was one at Tommy Leddy's and another at Mrs Galligan's Kildarry. The local names for them were hedge-schools. One of those schools was in a lane and the other in a field. The name of the Teacher who taught in one of those schools was Murtagh. I do not know whether he was a stranger or not. School was not carried on in farmers' houses in our district. In those schools long ago the scholars used to pay the Teacher for the instruction he gave. The subjects that were taught in those schools were Arithmetic, Grammar, writing and reading. There was no Irish spoken by master and pupils in those schools.
