    May is considered to be an unlucky time to marry. A rhyme relating to it is:-
    Marry in May
    And rue the day.
    If a person dies the people in the same townland do not work while the corpse is being kept in the townland. On Good Friday the people do not work until the afternoon as it is conspired unlucky in this district. People do not lend anything on May Day. Long ago when matches were not so common dealers on their way to Arva Fair on May Day were often refused a light for their pipes in the country houses. The person or animal born during Whitsuntide is called a cincoise. A blow from a cincoise is said to be unlucky. An animal born during Whitsuntide is put under a sod. It is said to be unlucky to go swimming or boating during Whitsuntide. May superstitious customs were indulged long ago by the old people on Halloween night. An apple is peeled without breaking the skin and thrown over the player's shoulder and it is said that the skin will form the future wife's initials.
