- Some years ago churning was done by machinery in every farmer's house. There was a churning machine attached to every dairy. Outside was a large shaft and wheel and this was worked by a horse that was harnessed to a shaft. The animal kept moving round in a circle for an hour. Inside was a large beam that continually kept moving up and down as the animal went round. The dash that was hanging from the beam moved up and down also, this was put in the churn and the churning was done in an hour. These have not been used since creameries were started, forty years ago.
