  1. The food of our forefathers was neither very palatable nor very varied. For a long period the potato was the staple food and when it failed Indian corn, or "yellow meal" as it was more commonly called as well as oaten meal was substituted. But the potato returned to favour again, and was eaten with buttermilk, salted fish or lard. They could not afford to buy meat.
