- Long ago the houses were made differently to now-a-days. They were unhealthy and small.
The walls were, in some districts, always made from mud. There was first a low foundation of stone and then the rest was made from mud. The beams, cross-beams and rafters were of bog-deal or oak and these were covered with sods taken from the surface of a field or bog. Then the thatch was put on. This consisted of straw or rushes and the first layer was secured with wire or cords. The second layer secured to the first one and so on. The walls were then whitewashed.- Bailitheoir
