- (I)Long ago the people used to call the first day of May, a "Gentle Day" because that was one of the days the fairies made mischief.If the people said anything that might vex the fairies that day they would put some misfortune on them. So they used to call the first day of May a "Gentle Day" for that reason. This was to please the "Good People".
