- Many years ago, when witchcraft was still common enough in Ireland, a farmer and his wife noticed that, although they had fine cows they had a very small yield of milk and a worse yield of butter from the milk. They could not understand it at all.
(One day) The farmer happened to be out fowling, very early one Summer morning in his own fields. To his great surprise, he noticed a large hare sucking the milk from the teats of his best cow, At once he raised his gun, fired and hit the hare but did not kill him. The hare gave an unmerciful screech and raced away. A stream of blood followed him as he ran.
