  1. Until about thirty years ago, when a person died in this district, the corpse was taken from the bed and laid on some straw on the floor. The corpse was then washed, and if the person was a Catholic a brown dress called a 'habit' was put on, a brown cap was put on the head, stockings on the feet and white gloves on the hands. (This dress is still put on) If the house was small the body was removed to the barn and stretched on a long table. A kind of tent was made round the table with white sheets. A crucifix and religious pictures were placed round this tent. A small table was left alongside on which were three large lighted candles.
    The 'man of the house' and some neighbour along with him went to the town for the 'Funeral Goods' and the material for the coffin. A plentiful supply of clay pipes tobacco, whiskey & wines was brought home. The neighbours all came to
