- Marriages long ago are Different from now a days. Long ago it was a great custom for a boy and girl to run away and not let their parents know anything anything about their intended marriages. Very often the girl would have to steal out of the house with her good clothes and leave them in some neighbour's house until she would be in the act of going away with her intended husband.
Some would get married before they would leave their own parish. Others would go to Dublin, Belfast, England and Scotland and get married there.
