- Long ago there was a hedge school in the townland of Aughna The teacher's name was master Healy. He had to pay no lodging because he lived near the school. The hedge schools were indoors and they were built like huts. The teachers were paid a penny or two pence a week.
They taught sums, writing and reading at that time and all the subjects were taught in English. They used to have slates for the pupils to write on. Only the pupils that lived near the school that went to it. They had longer hours in Summer than in Winter. They were seated on stones.
