The great mass of the people, the Catholics, who were the owners of the land, were driven from their homes by the English protestants. They were deprived from taking part in religious cermonies. Bishops and priests were hunted from Ireland, they could not say mass in public. But our priests were in hiding places and said mass on a rock where ever possible, and ministered to their people in backward places. The country was in a frightful condition lots of people died with hunger and plague. Corpse's lay unburied until wild beasts devoured them.
