Houses in Olden Times:
The old houses in this district were made of mud which was allowed to harden. They were small houses with a door and a small window on one side. The roof was made of limbs of trees and it was thatched with rushes. The rushes were held down with short sticks or scollops. These houses were very unhealthy as there was very poor ventilation. Also the chimney was so small that there was a poor chance for the smoke to escape and it filled the house.
The floors were of mud. In winter they were generally wet and damp but the people were so hardy it did not seem to affect them. These floors were kept clean by sweeping with a broom. The broom was made of branches of heather tied together to make a brush. These brooms were in general use until recent years.
