- (continued from previous page)‘Cut’ the furrows again and shovel up the clay on them a second time. When the stalks have the ground well covered we spray them. We buy spraying material- ‘blue stone’ and steep it for some hours in a tub. We steep washing soda in another vessel and mix them. We fill a sprayer with this mixture and a man carries this on his back and goes up and down the furrows spraying the stalks on each side. At the end of a fortnight we give them a second spraying using a lighter mixture and sometimes we spray them a third time. From the end of July we dig about a stone of potatoes every day for our own use till the time comes to dig and store them. In autumn when the stalkers are withered and the potatoes quite ‘loose’ from them we dig them with spades and put them in pits in the field. If the autumn is damp some potatoes may be black or rotten and we are careful not to put those in.
We gather them and boil them as soon as possible for fowl and pigs.(continues on next page)- Collector
