When the fire is nearly over the boys take a coal and throw one in each field, in order to keep the place safe for the coming year. They also bring a coal into the house for safety. The fire is in honour of St. John because on the 24th of June he was beheaded by (Herd) Herod.
When the fire is lited well they sit around and tell how St. John was beheaded. I heard this story from Mrs Maguire Kelladone (aged 86 yrs)
