    and soon reached the castle which stood grim and ugly so that in spite of all the encouragement the young man had received, the sight of the gloomy-looking building struck a chill to his heart. Entering boldly, however, he soon encountered the terrible inhabitant and made his request in a firm voice demanding to be given or permitted to pluck an apple from Gáirdín na Ríoghachta. "Your request will be granted," replied the tyrant in a voice of thunder, "but first you must perform the tasks that I will set you." "Remember, however, that if you fail, you shall not leave this place alive." The young man agreed. He was given the first task - that of cleaning the stables. When he had worked for some time very earnestly without making any progress he called on the old man of the woods. the little wizened creature straightaway appeared and finished the task in a few seconds. The tyrant looked vexed and disappointed when he saw his first task accomplished. He then, with an evil smile named the second task. "Look towards yonder woods", he said, "there in those trees are countless birds gather them all quickly and place them in that house you see over there." No sooner had he departed than the young man blew a sharp blast on his whistle and immediately the crow came flying towards him followed by huge flocks of birds.
