    When it was time to pay the rent, a poor man went to Castlebar to sell oats so he would have money to pay the rent.

    walking. When he came near home he noticed everyone looking at him but he didn't mind. As he was late with the rent he went to pay that first. The landlord lived in a big house a long way in from the road. The maid that opened the door nearly fainted when she saw the dead man, as she thought. She ran in and told the landlord that a dead man was at the door. He put his head out the window & asked him what he wanted. He told him he came to pay the rent, but the landlord told him to go home and that he would never have to pay rent. The man went off very happy, but he met an other man coming to pay the rent and he told him he need not pay any rent because the landlord told him so. The man asked him if the landlord had given him a receipt but he said he hadnot so he went in again & got a receipt saying he would never have to pay rent. He then went home but when his wife saw him coming she locked all the doors & windows so that he could not come in. As it was Sunday morning he said he would go to Mass whatever would happen. Everyone that saw him were running away but he didnot know why. When he came as far as the Church all the people that were there ran away. He told the priest
