When an animal is sold it is marked with blue chalk or soil, or by having a little of the hair cut off its back. When a horse is sold it is considered lucky to give the halter to the buyer, but it is given with no other animal.
The great fairs of the years are held on the 17th of March, the 5th of April and the 29th of October. - The fairs round this district are held in Ballyhaunis, Kilkelly, Ballinlough and Castlerea,, and some people go to Kiltimagh to sell their cattle. Sometimes farmers make bargains at their own homes. I could find out nothing about farmers making bargains at crossroads. The fair that was held in Ballina Costello has now been discontinued, because it was not convenient for cattle dealers to get there as no trains ran near the place.
