There is a fair-green very close to the town of Ballyhaunis. Toll is is paid on animals when they are sold, on bonhams three pence, and on cows usually a shilling; but some people pay half a crown. When an animal is sold luck-money is given. It is called "luck-money" or "luck-penny". When a bargain is made the buyer and seller strike each other's hands.
Purchased animals are marked with chalk or with a knife. The halter is given to the buyer with a horse. - The local landlord was Lord Dillon. As far back as the old people can remember the Dillons have been landlords in this district. They were considered good landlords. Numerous plantations(continues on next page)
