“Once upon a time there lived a man and a woman who had three sons.”
Once upon a time there lived a man and a woman who had three sons. They were very poor and had not any food to eat. The husband told his wife to go to her brother who was a cow-herd to get meal to feed the children.
She went to her brother to ask it, and the answer he gave her was "I do now know what you want children for" "There is a barn of straw outside in the haggard and bring the children to it and put them in and when you get them asleep, set fire to the straw." She said that she would go home and tell her husband, to find out what he would say.
When she told her husband, he answered her, that he would not let her do such a thing and that he would rather beg round the country with them before he would so such a wicked thing.
