    Once upon a time there lived a man named Gobniu in Ireland.

    Once upon a time there lived a man named Gobniu in Ireland. He had a wonderful cow. She used to graze from one end of Ireland to the other in one day. She had as much milk as ten cows. She was known everywhere as the cow of plenty. Now Balor of the evil eye set his heart on this fine animal, and he sent a man to steal it. The thief came in the dark of the night and he came quietly but he did not come quietly enough. Gobniu heard him, and he rose from his bed."Who is there" he called and his voice like thunder. The thief crept away in the dark of the night, glad to escape with his life. Gobniu found his cow quite safe, but her magic halter was gone. The thief had carried
