  1. Long ago people used to grow flax for the making of linen, it grew about three feet high. When ripe they cut it and tied it in small sheaves, and put it steeping in the bog hole for a few weeks, then they dried it in a kiln and tied it in sheaves again and beat it with a mallet, to break the coarse straw. Afterwards they scutched it, to knock out whatever seed was left. Next they hackled it to take out the coarse straw., from which they made bags and rough sheets. From the fine things they made hanks, and steeped them in sheep dung water, and after a few days they were taken out and left bleaching for a few weeks. After this they would be rolled into balls and woven into linen.
