    Police and soldiers stood outside,
And wished the scenes were o'er,
    While the cowardly bailliffs
    Like demons loose,
    Attacked the roof and door.
But Saunder's men soon drove them back
With stones and slates and sticks:
T'was a sorrowful scene in Ireland
    In September '86.

But in stepped Fr. Fahy who would not see his people die
    From eviction and starvation
To save them he did try.

He was sent to Galway Jail.
Says he, "Sure I commit no crime,
I'll not go out on bail."

He was met by thousands there,
And the noble hearted Galway men
Their cheers rang through the air.

And then with stones and sticks
They attacked the Jail in Galway town,
    In September '86.
