  1. The famine years of 46 and 47 was felt as keenly in this district as perhaps in any other part of Ireland. The potato crop failed on the ground and even if it did fail the people had the corn to fall back on. But at that time the tyrant landlords had their mark on the corn ricks to furnish the rent, so that poor innocent people at that timid had to starve and die rather than incur the wrath of the landlord
