    Lough Melvin is noted for its fishery. In this lough there is a strange fish which is not found in any other part of the world. Many writers in different parts of the world have written about this fish. Its name is the Gillroe. Many stories are told about this fish. Here is one of the stories.
    Long ago when the monks were driven from their monasteries there was a monk at this lake who was in the habit of begging of a Protestant man. One time when there was no food for his breakfast he went to the prostant man and asked him for his dinner. It was Friday and there was no fish in the house and a fowl was cooked for him. Immediately it turned into a fish and all the other fish that were in the yard ran to the lake and jumped into the lake and were changed into fish and these fish have the liver of a hen.
