- (continued from previous page)a big white thing with fiery eyes and two long spears. He dropped the torch and ran without telling any of the others what had happened and of course they ran too. It was after his house they overtook him and asked him what happened. It was then he said he saw a ghost. So they all went home and made up their minds not to torch any more. Next morning my father went for a stick and lost and he saw a big white ass where they were frightened the night before. (Note "torch" is pronounced tórch as in "ówe")
- There was a woman from Duagh and she used to be making butter. One day she sent a girl with a can of butter to a house named McElligotts. As the girl was passing through a fort she got a pain in her leg, and she fell down. She called to the neighbours and the neighbours came and carried the butter to the house and carried her to their own house. After a week she blackened and she was about a month laid up, and she died.
