“Twelve rush candles were burned ...”
Twelve rush candles were burned on night of January 5th in honour of twelve apostles. This custom survived down to quite recently- Taking white heads of cabbage and breaking them on road or at a doorstep; often led to serious trouble.
Ducking for apples
Melting lead and pouring into water to see shape of future husband or wife.
Three saucers, one with clay, one with ring and one with water to signify marriage, emigration and death
