This long line is then put in position around a lough and sometimes the fisher is rewarded with an enormous catch of eel. Often professional fishers come from distant places to fish the small loughs with which Leitrim abounds.
Bream fishing, or cardey fishing, is the most important perhaps of all the types of fishing pursued. The bream or cardey is a large flat fish sometimes weighing as much as seven or eight pounds; the smaller ones, known as shades, weigh about half a pound.
